Geom torus4. [carretilla elevadora] forklift truckTOROSBullfighting is a highly controversial topic in all of the countries where it takes place. As well as in Spain itself (where campaigns against it are on the increase, especially among young people), it is popular in many Latin American countries, especially Peru and Mexico, though it has been banned in Uruguay since 1912. The fight begins with the band playing as the mounted officials (“alguacilillos”) ride into the ring, followed by a majestic parade of bullfighters (“toreros”). During this parade (or “paseíllo”), the bullfighters, wearing their colourful costumes (known as “trajes de luces”), lead in their teams of assistants (“subalternos”) and picadors. First the bull is provoked into charging by a series of passes (the “pases de capote”) made with a red and yellow coloured cape. This is followed by the three main stages of the bullfight. In the first, the “tercio de varas”, mounted picadors jab the bull with a spear; in the second, the “tercio de banderillas”, small barbed darts (“banderillas”) are thrust into the bull's back as it charges past the “banderillero”; and finally, the “tercio de muerte” features the bullfighter and his red cape (“muleta”) as he confronts and kills the bull, and (with luck) makes a triumphal exit.* * *m bull;ir a los toros go to a bullfight;tomar al toro por los cuernos take the bull by the horns* * *toro nm: bull* * *toro n bull -

National public holidays include Navidad (25 December), Reyes (6 January), the Día de los Trabajadores (1 May), the Día de la Hispanidad/del Pilar (12 October) and the Día de la Constitución (6 December). Additionally, each autonomous region and town has at its discretion a small number of public holidays that usually coincide with local traditions like a patron saint's day or other celebrations such as Carnaval. Thus there is a holiday in Madrid for San Isidro, the city's patron saint, and one in Catalonia for Sant Jordi, who is the patron saint of the region.* * *1) ( celebración) partydieron una gran fiesta — they threw o had a big party

This is largely because of the importance of such celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world. Every town or village, of whatever size, has its day (if not week) of annual celebrations. These may be associated with the local patron saint or with some historical event, such as Independence Day. On these days people may dress up in traditional clothes, take part in traditional dances and eat special dishes associated with the festival. There may be firework displays and street processions of a more or less religious nature, and, as the saying goes, a good time is generally had by all.* * *f1 festival;estar de fiesta be in a party mood;no estar para fiestas be in no mood for jokes;¡se acabó la fiesta! the party’s over!hacer fiesta have a day off* * *fiesta nf1) : party, fiesta2) : holiday, feast day* * *fiesta n2. Despite an order to flee to their homes, the military cadets refused to leave, and six who died in the fighting are commemorated as the Niños Héroes. The youngest was aged just 13 and none was older than 20. Despite some doubts which have been raised about the more colourful aspects of the legend (e.g. wrapping themselves in the national flag and leaping to their deaths from the battlements), they remain among the most honoured figures in Mexico's pantheon of national heroes. When US president Harry Truman placed a wreath at their monument on a visit to Mexico in 1947, the gesture went down very well, so much so that President Clinton repeated it in 1997.* * *I adj young; despchildish;¡no seas niño! don’t be childish!II m1 boy;como niño con zapatos nuevos like a child with a new toy3:niños pl children* * *niño, -ña n: child, boy m, girl f* * *niño n3.
